There's no doubt that Facebook for tourism businesses is a major social media channel to create awareness and engagement with travellers and potential guests. Getting your content looking at it's best is vital for creating inspiring first impressions and engagement!
Part of the challenge is getting the resolution (pixel size) right for the various image placements available. This guide for Facebook image and video sizes (based on 2023 Facebook standards) is a handy reference if you regularly create/crop images and upload video to your business page. Facebook Profile
Your Cover Photo
This should be a hero image of what your business offers making is inspiring to book! Remember that part of the bottom left of the image will be obscured by the round profile image so consider that when selecting or cropping your image to fit. It can be a good strategy to change out your cover photo regularly to support seasonal campaigns and promotions.
- Recommended pixel size - 851 x 315 pixels
- Aspect ratio - 16:9
- Accepted file format - PNG or JPG
Your Profile Picture
Typically this is your logo (provided it fits nicely in the circle shape), a brand motif, or something that strongly identifies your brand or business. As it is a circle, it will crop square images so make sure it does look great!
- Recommended pixel size - 851 x 315 pixels
- Aspect ratio - 1:1
- Accepted file format - PNG or JPG
Facebook Newsfeed
Image Posts
This is what you are likely to use the most often for your organic content when you create posts.
- Recommended pixel size: 1200 x 630 pixels
- Aspect ratio: 1.9:1 (horizontal format)
- Accepted file format - PNG or JPG
Video Posts
If you make videos to share you need to think about whether your audience are most likely to view it on mobile or desktop. Increasingly the answer will be mobile so vertical is great. A square video plays fine on both desktop and mobile. We also recommend adding captions to your videos for accessibility and "sound-off" environments.
- Recommended pixel size: at least 1080 x 1080 pixels (for a square video) and 1080 x 1920 pixels (for vertical videos on mobile)
- Aspect ratio: 1:1 (for desktop and mobile); 4:5 (for mobile)
- Accepted file types: MP4, MOV, GIF
- Length: 1 second to 241 minutes
- Maximum file size: 4GB
Reels
Reels are an ideal tool for tourism businesses to showcase your business in short and entertaining videos or using a collection of images. Social media users in 2023 prefer to consume visually appealing content that doesn't require much in the way of reading. Short-form video such as reels are incredibly popular and gain great engagement.
- Recommended pixel size: at least 1080 x 1080 for images, and at least 500 x 888 for videos
- Aspect ratio: 1.91:1 to 1:1 for images, and 9:16 for videos
- Accepted file types: JPG & PNG for images; MP4 & MOV for videos.
- Video length: up to 90 seconds
- Maximum file size: 30MB for images; 4GB for videos
Story Posts
Stories are quick fun posts that disappear after 24 hours, normally video but can also be a collection of images. They are easy to watch, and should just feel natural rather than rehearsed or overly produced.
Story Images:
With images remember to leave space (approx 250 pixels of the top, and 340 pixels of the bottom) free from design elements to avoid covering them with your CTAs.

- Accepted file types: JPG, PNG
- Maximum file size: 30MB
Story Videos:
Story videos should be kept super short (less than 15 seconds) so you need to capture attention quickly!
- Recommended minimum pixel width: 500 pixels
- Aspect ratio: 9:16 to 1.91:1
- Maximum file size: 4 GB
- Maximum duration: 120 seconds
Facebook Ads
Running paid ad campaigns through the Meta Business Suite is strategy that will boost your posts/ads to reach targeted audiences outside of your own followers and network. It's a powerful tool that allows any business to participate based on your own goals and budget. There are various different locations on feeds that ads appear and some different formats like Carousel Ads that are available.
Image Ads
- Recommended pixel size: 1080 x 1080 pixels
- Aspect ratio: 1.91:1 to 1:1
- Maximum file size: 30MB
Video Ads
- Recommended pixel size: at least 1080 x 1080 pixels
- Aspect ratio: 1:1 (desktop and mobile), 4:5 (only for mobile)
- Accepted file types: MP4, MOV, GIF
Carousel Ads
- Recommended pixel size: 1080 x 1080 pixels
- Aspect ratio: 1:1
- Image file type: JPG, PNG
- Video file type: MP4, MOV, GIF
- Maximum cards accepted: 10
- Maximum file size per image: 30MB
- Maximum file size per video: 4GB
